Use The Timeshifter App Before Traveling To Avoid Jet Lag
Well, hello again!! Greetings from my hometown of Spokane, WA! Maaaaaybe you noticed that I was silent the past couple of weeks and that’s because I finally traveled back home from Vietnam! And what a journey that was: saying goodbye, traveling for 35 hours (😳), and acclimating to a whole new world… I share a bit more of my update and reverse culture shock down below, but I thought it would be fitting to make this week’s modern magic trick about travel. 🌏
I’ve been traveling for 5 years now (😳😳) and I’ve become quite used to long-haul flights (and layovers). I realized how used to traveling I am now when a friend said she was so worried about her 4-hour layover and what she would do with all that time. During my journey back home, I had 2 layovers over 10 hours and it didn’t freak me out at all! I guess I’ve officially become a ‘seasoned traveler?’
One of the hardest parts of traveling is the jet lag, though. That’s why today’s magic trick is an app that saves you from the jet lag struggle; and I know this now because this journey back was the first time I DIDN’T use this app.
Timeshifter is a jet lag app you can download, plug in your flight details, and it will create a schedule that helps soooo much with jet lag. I’ve used it almost every time I’ve done major flights, and it always saved me. I’ll be honest, this trip home, I thought I had mastered jet lag and wouldn’t succumb to it. I didn’t use this app and thought I could figure it out on my own, but boy oh boy was I wrong! That was a huge mistake on my part because my body’s schedule was messed up for over a week (hence the lack of Magic Mondays!).
There are a lot of websites that show a general jet lag timeline, but Timeshifter is super personal. You not only enter your flight info, you also enter your normal sleep schedule, caffeine intake, work schedule, chronotype, if you use melatonin, etc. Then this app will show you a personalized timeline of when you should sleep, stay awake, have low-light, stop drinking caffeine, etc. based on your answers. It lays it out in such a simple, easy-to-read way, so when you arrive at your destination, your body is fairly acclimated already.
I’m just sharing this because I wish I would have used it for my latest trip! So if you are traveling any time soon, I really recommend using this app!
Tip #1: Download this app several days before your trip because the adjustments to your schedule begin a couple days before you depart.
Tip #2: Timeshifter is a paid app – BUT- you get your first trip for free. So if you have a couple email addresses, you can…cough cough utilize them as you see fit. 😉
Happy traveling!!

QUOTE OF THE WEEK
We travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us.
ON A PERSONAL NOTE
I’m back home! Wow wow wow. What a trip it is to be back in my hometown after traveling for a year and a half. In some ways, it feels like everything is different – yet in some ways, nothing has changed at all. It’s been so wonderful catching up with family and friends, going to Target (seriously!), and eating my comfort meals again.
It’s bizarre to me that just days ago, I was walking along the busy streets and dodging motorbikes in Hanoi, Vietnam – and now, I’m watching a toddler’s soccer game and walking around quiet neighborhoods. The reverse culture shock is UNREAL!
In the past couple of weeks, I’ve had so much family time, turned 36 (ahhh!), went to Harry Potter In Concert, and even reunited with my best friends since Kindergarten! My heart has been happy! Coming back to my roots is really special because I can see all the ways I was shaped growing up. Even walking by my old elementary school made me emotional. It literally feels like I’m experiencing my childhood again, but as an adult – I don’t know if that makes sense. But it’s extremely special because now I have a newfound gratitude for everything that shaped my identity growing up.
I’m excited to live in the moment while I’m back – but I’ll be honest, I am really looking forward to the day I’m back with Ninh on the other side of the world. Going out into the world and then coming back to your roots is an indescribable feeling. It’s helping me appreciate every aspect of my life – beyond grateful for the life that shaped me and the life that I’m creating!
Sending you so much love,
Andrea
