Think In Fresh Ways By Implementing Pattern Interrupts
Our brains are obsessed with familiarity through routines and habits (its’ favorite place is the comfort zone), and while this is helpful in many ways – it can also lead to limited thinking and reduced creativity. So if you ever feel bored or like you’re experiencing Groundhog Day, try bringing in some pattern interrupts to shake things up.
A pattern interrupt is a deliberate action or change that disrupts your habitual thought pattern, routine, or habit. It basically means doing something unexpected and out of the ordinary to jolt your mind out of autopilot mode.
This doesn’t mean you need to do something drastic – something really simple can be a pattern interrupt and surprisingly make a big change in your day.
Here are some examples:
- Brush your teeth with your non-dominant hand
- Rearrange your workspace
- Take a different route to work
- Pay for someone’s coffee on your coffee run
- Sleep on the other side of your bed
- Write in all-caps
There are so many ways to incorporate pattern interrupts throughout your day – and you’d be surprised at what they can lead to! Even though they are simple acts, they are still stepping out of your comfort zone and creating new neural pathways in your brain. Tiny changes can lead to enhanced creativity, improved adaptability, increased productivity, and more.
Several years ago, I was too afraid to do anything by myself or out of my comfort zone. One day, I decided to go to a movie alone and I was sooooo scared! That was a huge pattern interrupt for me, and you know what? It had a major snowball effect! I wouldn’t be a world traveler now if it weren’t for that simple solo movie date. 😂
Give it a try and see how you feel!

ON A PERSONAL NOTE
Plane tickets bought to Vietnam – yayyyyy! We’re heading back to our favorite place! It’s ironic that last year at this time, we were in North Macedonia buying our plane tickets to Vietnam for October. Deja Vu! We’ll be back in Da Nang at the end of October and my heart is soooo excited!
I do really love Bansko, Bulgaria, but there is just something about Asia that makes me so happy. I can’t wait for the energy, food, beach, and the COFFEE!! Finding a really good (and large) latte is nearly impossible here in Bansko! 😂 We have almost a month and a half left here, so we’ll definitely take advantage of our time! It’s starting to get pretty cold, so I’m definitely enjoying being in sweats with Gilmore Girls on in the background. This weather doesn’t really exist in Vietnam, so I’m soaking it up as much as possible. 🍂
Are there any places in the world that make you completely light up??
Have a magical week! Love to you,
