Do Absolutely Nothing For 4 Hours

A vipassanā meditation is when you are completely silent and do nothing, other than eat, walk, and sleep – all while meditating. They’re typically 5-10 days long (think about “Eat, Pray, Love” when she was in India). I kept hearing about them when I lived in Thailand – you basically stay in a small room at a temple for 5-10 days, wake up at 5am, and meditate the entire day. There is no communication, reading, writing, or entertainment of any kind! I really wanted to try it, but couldn’t take that much time off of work (but the truth was that I was WAY too scared to actually try).

Does this sound incredible? Or like torture? If you’re like me, it gives you anxiety just thinking about it.

BUT, I can tell you that having your own mini vipassanā meditation at home is quite enlightening.

Sit in your room for around 4 hours and do NOTHING. No reading. No journaling. No listening to music or podcasts. No sleeping. Simply sit and be with yourself.

How often do you go without looking at your phone, TV, or computer? How often do you actually just sit and let your mind wander with nothing to distract you? We are inundated with messages and thoughts 24/7, yet, we rarely spend time with nothingness (or just observe our thoughts).

I happened to do a 4-hour vipassanā meditation on Saturday, and let me tell you: it was exactly what I needed. It was a mental reset – and a reminder that I can do anything I set my mind to! (It’s wild how literally doing nothing can be SO HARD.)

It usually starts out really challenging and you’ll be fidgety. It’s a foreign feeling. But you’ll eventually ease into it, and I swear, it’s like a time warp. Let your mind wander, look out the window, and just be. Memories will pop up, you’ll likely work through some problems you may have, and you’ll think of some new ideas. During my vipassanā, I gained a lot of clarity and ended the 4 hours in a state of peace. A fresh start.

I highly recommend you try this – if you need a little pep talk, I’m here for you! It’s a challenging task, but so rewarding!

Namaste!

ON A PERSONAL NOTE

Plane tickets purchased! Soon, I’ll be back in Vietnam with Ninh again!! I’m so excited to be back in a place where my heart feels a little bit more full. North Macedonia has been a wonderful place for me to grow and become super productive. I leave for Vietnam in a little over a week, so I’m mentally preparing for a very long travel journey. Taking the time to soak up the last of the Fall crispness and continuing to watch the Lake Ohrid swans grow into adults.

I am so grateful for each and every one of you! I hope you have a magical week! ✨

With love,

Andrea
